High Aspect Ratio (Non-Flat) Devices

As a result of it's sophisticated optical design, the SF-100 is able to project complete images onto non-flat surfaces. This unique system capability is not available with traditional lithography systems. By combining this ability with standard photoresists, micropatterning now becomes available in many new areas. Additionally, greyscale imaging technology can be utilized in these applications to ensure uniform exposures across an image over a curved surface. Samples of this capability are shown below.

A 1mm diameter stainless steel rod is patterned around it's circumference using the SF-100. Through the implementation of special handling techniques, the rod can be exposed and then rotated precisely, so that the resulting image is continuous and adjacent images are accurately stitched together.

Standard photoresist processing is used to create patterns on these ping pong balls. These round substrates are approximately 1 inch in diameter and the above images show patterns that were made on both the convex and concave surfaces of the device.

Microscopic trenches are patterned on the external surfaces of intravenous (IV) needles which are only 350 um in diameter.
